THE ROUND

Cambridge University Country Dance Club

RULES

  1. The Club shall be called The Round.
  2. Membership shall be open to members of the University and their wives, members of the Cambridge Morris Men and their wives, and members of Girton and Newnham Colleges and their husbands. Graduates of other Universities, if resident in Cambridge and also members of Homerton College shall be eligible for membership.
  3. The annual subscription shall be 1/-, payable at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term. Additional charges shall be made for the meetings and parties, to make these self-supporting.
  4. Any member who has paid three annual subscriptions shall become a life member and shall not be required to pay further annual subscriptions unless resident in or near Cambridge.
  5. Meetings, at which country dances shall be taught, shall be held during the University Terms at intervals to be decided by the Committee, who shall also fix the date of a Country Dance Party to be held each term.
  6. The Round shall be governed by a committee of not less than ten, nor more than sixteen members, eight to form a quorum. The committee shall meet at least once in each University Term, after due notice to all its members.
  7. The Committee shall, from time to time, co-opt new members it considers likely to maintain the traditions of The Round and to be in Cambridge long enough to be of service to it. Nominations for such new members shall be submitted in writing for the consideration of the Committee.
  8. Members of the committee shall retire after three years service, but may be re-elected. Any member shall be required to resign from the Committee on ceasing to be an active member of The Round by reason of leaving Cambridge or otherwise.
  9. The Committee shall, at appropriate times, elect from its own number the following Officers: a Chairman, a Treasurer, one or more Instructors, and two Organisers.
  10. The Chairman shall be in statu pupillari and shall hold office for one academic year only. He or she shall call all meetings of the Committee and preside thereat, and shall invite nominations for new Committee members.
  11. The Treasurer shall be of M.A. standing and shall retire annually, but may be re-elected. He shall hold the funds and properties of The Round, and shall pay all accounts incurred with the approval of the Committee.
  12. The Instructors shall be persons of considerable dancing experience and proven teaching ability. They shall retire annually, but may be re-elected, and they shall not be invalidated from holding other office if elected to it. They shall be responsible for maintaining a high standard of teaching at all meetings of The Round, whether given by an Instructor personally or delegated.
  13. The two Organisers, preferably one man and one woman, shall be in statu pupillari and shall hold office for one University Term at a time, but may be re-elected. They shall jointly, severally, or by delegation:
    1. perform all secretarial work required.
    2. collect all annual subscriptions and keep a list of members of The Round.
    3. collect the ad-hoc charges for all meetings and parties.
    4. obtain halls and musicians for all meetings and parties.
    5. obtain Proctorial permission for all activities taking place outside the precincts of a college or private house.
    6. produce a programme for each party, arrange for an M.C., and provide suitable refreshments.
    7. consult with the Instructors to produce programmes for the meetings and to make sure that there will always be a competent teacher in charge.
    8. render, at the end of each Term, an account of all moneys received and spent, and hand the balance to the Treasurer.
  14. Any person eligible for membership shall be allowed to attend one ordinary meeting free of charge.
  15. Any member of The Round shall be allowed to bring as a guest to an ordinary meeting any friend visiting Cambridge, but shall introduce him or her to the Chairman or one of the Organisers.
  16. Only members, and guests invited by the Committee, shall be allowed to attend parties.
  17. The committee shall be empowered to send teams from The Round to perform at Festivals, and to incur reasonable expenses for the rehearsing of the teams.
  18. The Committee shall be empowered to affiliate The Round, as an autonomous club, to any other country dance organisation.
  19. The committee shall have power to suspend, change, or add any rule by a two-thirds majority of the whole committee.
  20. All members shall be presented with a copy of the rules.
At a full meeting of the Committee held in Newnham College on November 8th 1945, it was resolved that the above Rules shall hold for the year 1946, that their working shall be closely watched, and that they shall be open to reconsideration in the Michaelmas Term 1946. Any member of The Round wishing to comment on their working should submit this in writing to the Chairman in time for the reconsideration next autumn.
