THE ROUND

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY COUNTRY DANCE CLUB

RULES 1951

  1. The Club shall be called 'The Round'.
  2. Membership shall be open to members of the University, their husbands and wives, members of the Cambridge Morris Men and their wives, and graduates of other Universities who are resident in Cambridge.
  3. Such charges shall be made for ordinary meetings and for parties as the Committee shall decide.
  4. Ordinary meetings, at which country dances shall be taught, shall be held during the University Terms at intervals to be decided by the Committee, who shall also fix the date of a Country Dance Party to be held each term.
  5. The Round shall be governed by a committee of not fewer than ten, nor more than sixteen members, eight being required to form a quorum. The committee shall meet at least once in each University Term, after due notice given to all its members.
  6. The Committee shall, from time to time, co-opt new members whom it considers likely to maintain the traditions of the Round and remain in Cambridge long enough to be of service to it.
  7. Members of the committee shall retire after Three years service but may be re-elected. Any member shall be required to resign from the Committee on ceasing to be an active member of the Round.
  8. The Committee shall elect from its own number the following officers: Chairman, Treasurer, one or more Instructors, and two Organisers. It shall also appoint annually an Auditor.
  9. The Chairman
    1. shall be in statu pupillari and shall hold office for one academic year only.
    2. shall call and preside over all meetings of the Committee.
    3. shall ensure that arrangements are made for Round meetings to be held in the Long Vacation Term.
    4. shall have power to make payment from the Round banking account by cheque.
    5. shall be responsible for the safe lodging of the properties of the Round.
    6. shall be responsible for organising Study Round.
  10. The Treasurer
    1. shall be of M.A. standing and shall retire annually, but may be re-elected.
    2. shall be responsible for the safe keeping of the funds.
    3. shall have power to make payment from the Round banking account by cheque.
    4. shall keep an account of the finances of the Round. The account shall include a summary of the organiser's cash account, a record of all cheque payments and bank statements, and shall be presented in Committee each year.
    5. shall be responsible for the safe keeping of the properties of the Round.
  11. The two Organisers, preferably one man and one woman, shall be in statu pupillari, and shall hold office for one or two University Terms at a time, and may be re-elected. Care should be taken that both Organisers do not relinquish office simultaneously.
  12. The Organiser (man)
    1. shall, before each term, consult with the Chairman and the Treasurer to ensure that Halls have been booked for all meetings of the Round.
    2. shall obtain proctorial permission for all activities taking place outside the precincts of a college or a private house.
    3. shall organise all extra activities as directed by the Committee.
    4. shall collect the charges for all meetings and parties and pay these and all other receipts into the Round banking account.
    5. shall make small payments as required out of petty cash.
    6. shall keep a single cash book with a detailed account of all money received and spent.
    7. shall, at the end of each term, before he goes down, pay into the Round banking account all money that he holds, and hand to the Treasurer or Chairman a completed account for the term together with all receipted bills.
  13. The Organiser (woman)
    1. shall consult with the Instructors to arrange a scheme of teaching for the year and produce a programme for each meeting.
    2. shall ensure that musicians are obtained for all meetings and parties.
    3. shall ensure that a competent teacher is present at each meeting.
    4. shall, at each party, provide suitable refreshment and consult with the Chairman in order to arrange for an M.C. and a programme.
  14. The Instructors. shall be persons of considerable dancing experience and teaching ability and shall be responsible for maintaining a high standard of teaching at all ordinary meetings of the Round, whether it is given by an Instructor personally or delegated. Tenure of the office of Instructor shall not be a disqualification from holding any other office in the Round. (vide rule 8)
  15. Any person eligible for membership shall be allowed to attend one ordinary meeting free of charge.
  16. Any member of the Round shall be allowed to bring as a guest to an ordinary meeting any friend visiting Cambridge, but shall introduce him to the Chairman or to one of the Organisers.
  17. Only members and guests invited by the Committee, shall be allowed to attend parties.
  18. The committee shall be empowered to send teams from The Round to perform at Festivals, and to incur reasonable expenses for the rehearsing of the team.
  19. The Committee shall have the power to affiliate the Round, as an autonomous club, to any other country dance organisation.
  20. The committee shall have power to suspend, change, or add any rule by a two-thirds majority of the whole committee.
  21. The Rules shall be available for inspection by any member of the Round and each member of the Committee shall be presented with a copy.
These Rules were discussed and proposed at a sub-committee meeting held on May 20th 1951.
